Frequently asked questions
General
What do you do?
I restore damaged and faded photographs by hand, scan prints, film and slides, retouch photos for brands and photographers, and design websites, brands and print pieces for small businesses.
Where are you based?
I work from Smoky Lake, Alberta. Scanning happens there. Restoration, retouching and design are done online, so you can be anywhere. See the service area for distances and drop-off options.
Do you use AI to restore photos?
No. I restore photographs by hand, working from the print itself. Automatic tools tend to invent faces and smooth away texture. By hand, the result keeps the grain, the clothing and the expressions that make the photograph yours.
How long have you been restoring photos?
For over 10 years. I have more than 25,000 hours of hands-on retouching and restoration behind me, and my work has been printed in more than seven countries. Read more about me.
Can I see examples of your work?
Yes. The portfolio has before-and-after pairs you can drag to compare, plus a full page for each design project.
Scanning
What can you scan?
Prints, 35 mm film, slides and non-standard negatives. If you have something unusual, describe it when you ask for a quote and I tell you whether I can scan it.
Will my originals be safe?
I handle every item with care and return your originals to you with the digital files. If you post them, read the guide to packing and sending photos first.
What resolution should I choose?
It depends on the original and on what you plan to do with the scan. I agree the resolution with you in the quote. The guide to choosing a scanning resolution explains the trade-offs.
Can you scan a whole collection?
Yes. Tell me roughly how many prints, film strips and slides you have and I quote the collection as one order.
Restoration
What kind of damage can you fix?
Cracks, creases, tears, stains, fading, scratches, mould spots, missing corners and blur. What can and cannot be restored explains the limits honestly.
My photo is badly damaged. Can it be saved?
Often, yes. Send me a scan or a phone photo and I tell you what is realistic before you commit to anything.
Do I need to send the original?
You can start with a scan or a good phone photo. For the best result I scan the original myself, because a careful scan keeps detail that a quick copy loses.
Will the restored photo look brand new?
It will look clean and clear, and still look like a photograph from its time. I repair damage and stop there, so the photo keeps its natural look.
Can you add colour to a black and white photo?
Yes, on request. Colour is a separate decision from repair, so I ask what you want and discuss it before I start.
Retouching
How fast is retouching?
Product and e-commerce images take 2 to 3 business days. Wedding and family batches take 14 business days. Other turnarounds are agreed in the quote.
Do you edit batches for wedding and family photographers?
Yes. I sort, colour-correct and process whole sets so they read as one consistent gallery. Larger batches earn a bigger discount. See wedding and family batch editing.
Will my portraits look over-processed?
No. My aim is a natural result: skin, face and hair cleaned up while the person stays recognisable. If you want a lighter or stronger touch, tell me and I match it.
Do I need to visit you for retouching?
No. Retouching is online. You send files, I return finished images by secure download.
Design
What do you design?
Websites, online stores, brand identities and brand books, brochures and landing pages. See the design services and the design portfolio.
Can you prepare product photos for my online store?
Yes. E-commerce photo retouching gives a whole catalogue the same clean background and light.
How does a design project start?
With a conversation about your business, your customers and what you want people to do. You then receive a plan and a quote, and nothing begins until you approve them.
Pricing
How do prices work?
Each service has a fixed unit: per print, per image or per project. I confirm the final price in your quote before any work starts. See the pricing page.
Do you give discounts for larger orders?
Yes. Volume discounts apply automatically once your order reaches the number listed on the pricing page.
When do I pay?
Payment terms are written in your quote, so you know them before you agree.
Mail and delivery
Can I mail my originals to you?
Yes. Canada Post works well for prints and film. Tell me before you ship, and read the guide to packing and sending photos.
Where do I send my originals?
Post them to the mailing address on the contact page, a post office box in Smoky Lake. Write to me first so I can expect the parcel, and read the guide to packing photos and film. Couriers cannot deliver to a post office box, so ask me for a delivery option if you prefer a courier.
Who pays for shipping and insurance?
Mailing terms such as insurance, tracking and return shipping are agreed in writing before you send anything.
Can I drop off or pick up in Smoky Lake?
Yes. We agree a time first. See the Smoky Lake page.
How do I receive my files?
Digital files are delivered at full resolution by secure download, adapted for print or for screen as you need.
Can you ship printed work to me?
Printed work can be shipped, including internationally, with a tracked courier. The details are confirmed in your quote.
